ROBERT WALTER "BLACKIE'' WEST

Robert Walter "Blackie'' West, 102, of Lebanon, died Sunday, April 16, 2017, in Lebanon.

He was born Oct. 13, 1914, in Pocahontas, Iowa to Walter B. and Anna Wood West.

On May 22, 1938, he married Sibyl Calkins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 58 years, Sibyl; a son, Kenneth West; a daughter, Carolyn West; a grandson, Jeffrey West; a brother, Charles West; three sisters, Helen West, Grace Van Hooser and Hazel Harrison; nephews Larry Van Hooser, and Chuck Ayres, and a niece, Sue Bailey.

Robert was a lifelong resident of Lebanon and graduated from Lebanon High School in the Class of 1933. He was co-owner of West Hardware with his brother, Charles for five decades. He also served in the United States Army. He was instrumental in starting Little League Baseball in Lebanon and was inducted into the Lebanon Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2004. He was a member of the American Legion, served on the Lebanon School Board in the 1970s, and was president in 1974-1975.

He was a lifelong active and faithful member of First Baptist Church of Lebanon.

Survivors include one son, Bob West (Lynn), of Kansas City, Mo.; one daughter-in-law, Linda West, of Columbia; one sister, Wilma McMahan, of Lebanon; five grandchildren, John West (Carolyn), Robin Lewis (Brad), Amy West, Richard West (Stefanie), Laurie Painter (Clinton); 11 great-grandchildren, Dustin, Dannika and Dyllan West, Kyle, Kali, Caleb and Kesley Lewis, Scott and Bradley West, Brooke and Jeffrey Painter; a special cousin, Mary Scott; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life service for Robert Walter "Blackie'' West will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 21, 2017, at Shadel's Colonial Chapel with Tom Ford officiating.

Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery under the direction of Shadel's Colonial Chapel of Lebanon.

Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. until service time at 2:30 p.m. Sunday also at Shadel's Colonial Chapel.

Memorials have been suggested to Lebanon Little League or Regional Hospice of Lebanon, and donations can be left at or mailed to Shadel's Colonial Chapel, P.O. Box 948, Lebanon, Mo. 65536.
