Idris Denise (Meyer) Leatherman

Idris Denise (Meyer) Leatherman, 64, of Independence, formerly of Lebanon, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2017, in Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City.

She was born Dec. 16, 1952, at Wallace Hospital in Lebanon to George Henry and Twila (Hoskins) Meyer.

On Sept. 14, 1974, she married Bernard James Leatherman. They had one daughter, Amanda Janine.

She was raised in the Lebanon area, attending Rippy and Lebanon schools, graduating from Lebanon in 1970.

She worked at a number of jobs in Lebanon, Higginsville, and Kansas City, in Kansas and in Independence. She loved God, her family, music, especially piano, flowers and poetry. She had composed many poems and songs.

Denise was preceded in death by her father, George Henry Meyer, all four grandparents, two sisters, Georgia (Jo) Burns, Kay Meyer, both of Lebanon; and brothers-in-law, Bill Douglas, of Richland and Jessie Duncan, of Lebanon.

Survivors include her husband, Jim, of the home; a daughter, Amanda (Eric) Deke, of Buckner, Mo.; three grandchildren, Alex, Aspen and Evan Deke; her mother, Twila Elam, of Lebanon; three sisters, Betty Douglas, of Richland; Aleeta Duncan, of Lebanon, and Gladys (Darrell) Smith of Higginsville;  two brothers, George Henry (Carol) Meyer, of Montreal and Harry Meyer, of Lebanon; two aunts, Pauline Donigan, of Lebanon and Betty Hoskins, of East Peoria, Ill.; one uncle, Ralph Dee Brown of Lebanon; many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

A Celebration of Life for Denise will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 pm. Saturday, Sept. 16, 2017 at Shriners Hall in Lebanon. There will be a potluck for those who wish to join the family from noon to 12:30 p.m. Bring pictures and memories of Dee.

Private burial will be in Hufft Cemetery in Eldridge.
