Lebanon grad's movie to open in area theaters

Lebanon High School graduate,  John Finley will appear in his first film “I Can Only Imagine,” opening this week in area theaters.
J. Michael Finley, the name appearing on his Screen Actors Guild card, secured his first film in January of 2017.
The film is based on MercyMe lead singer and songwriter Bart Millard who wrote a popular song by the same title when he was inspired by the loss of his father to cancer. MercyMe is a Christian band, and Finley plays Millard with veteran actor Dennis Quaid playing his father.
Finley’s  father, Wayne, is a pastor at Heritage Baptist Church and has been in the ministry for years.
In an interview last year John Finley said, “I grew up with praise and worship music and grew up listening to MercyMe, which is the band that the movie’s about, and obviously know this song by heart, so when this project came across my email, I was immediately
interested in it and wanted to know more about it”.
Finley auditioned for the role using a video submission. The director and producer contacted Finley’s agent and then he flew to New York for a meeting and live audition.  Soon after, they let him know the role was his.
According to Finley, matching the vocal style of Millard was a challenge. “Bart Millard has kind of a country rock, grunge, late 90s type sound, and that’s what has made him famous, so it took a little bit of an adjustment for me,” Finley said.
