Joe Berkich makes sure the percentage of the board on either side of the hole drilled for the plumbing pipe is up to code. Plumbing inspector is just one of the many hats he wears as the Code Administrator.

Joe Berkich has always been surrounded by women.

He grew up with six sisters, is the father of two girls and recently celebrated the birth of his first grandchild, five-month-old Miss Everly Shumate.

His wife Linda is from Grove Springs, and they have been married for 33 years.

His daughter Krystal Shumate, 27, is a pre-K school teacher at McGregor Elementary School in Springfield.

His younger daughter, Karman Berkich, 21, is in he senior year at Missouri State University to be a teacher also.

When he is in his office at Lebanon City Hall, Berkich is surrounded by several kinds of code books. However, these are not the secret CIA code books from spy fiction.

Berkich is Lebanon’s Code Administrator and Building Official, and his code books detail various categories of construction codes the city demands of new construction. There are a lot of code books on his shelf.
