Next week, local employers and other “celebrities” will tip their hats to literacy as they wait tables at a local dinner — but they had better bring their own headwear.

The Laclede Literacy Council has about eight tables still available for its 12th annual Celebrity Waiter Dinner, which will take place at 5 p.m. April 4 at the Cowan Civic Center.

Laclede Literacy Council Executive Director Carol Barsby explained that the dinner is the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year.

Local businesses purchase tables at the dinner, and the business owner or another representative becomes a “celebrity” who serves dinner to the people they have invited. Individuals can purchase a table as well, and the Literacy Council will provide celebrities for those tables.

Proceeds from the event go to support the organization’s general mission, which is the education of adults and youth older than 16.
